“You don’t understand. Johnny Fontane never gets that movie. That part is perfect for him. It’ll make him a big star. I’m gonna run him out of the movies. And let me tell you why. Johnny Fontane ruined one of Woltz International’s most valuable proteges. For three years we had her under contract, singing lessons, dancing lessons, acting lessons. I spent hundreds of thousands of dollars. I was gonna make her a big star. And let me be even more frank, just to show you that I’m not a hard-hearted man, that it’s not all dollars and cents. She was beautiful, she was innocent, she was the greatest piece of ass I’ve ever had, and I’ve had it all over the world. And then Johnny Fontane comes along with his olive oil voice and guinea charm and she runs off. She threw it all away just to make me look ridiculous. And a man in my position can’t afford to be made to look ridiculous. Now you get the hell out of here. And you tell that gumba that if he wants to try any rough stuff that I ain’t no band leader. Yeah, I heard that story.”

“The US is building generating capacity in places that don’t need the electricity. Most wind farms are located in rurual areas, where there’s plenty of land and a pragmatic attitude that welcomes wind turbines as a ‘cash crop.’…But the transmission infrastructure to carry that power to cities is missing. Wind farms rely on big tax breaks to be competitive, and right now that money is being wasted. When more people catch wind of that fact, this promising form of alt energy could be labeled a boondoggle for farm states, as corn ethanol has been.”

“There are clever minds working out how the business model of “music access” is going to work. Perhaps this year Steve Jobs, the genius behind Apple, will finally join us. Jobs is a man of decisiveness and surprises. Bono and I did a deal with him, sitting in his kitchen in Palo Alto, to launch the U2 iPod in 2004 - I still have the notes I scribbled down in the back of my diary. Jimmy Iovine was there, too, and I remember he said of iTunes, “This may be the penicillin!” Sadly it turned out not to be. Steve is the guy who has always magically known what the consumer wants before the consumer even knows it. I wish he would put that great mind and that great corporation of his to work devising a model that finally allows artists and creators to get properly rewarded for their work. Maybe he’s working on it right now. I hope so.”

“I grew up watching Tina Turner, James Brown, Michael Jackson, people who were performers, not just singers. For some reason the performance style that’s cool right now is not trying too hard. But to me, if you’re going to do anything, why not try hard? It takes vulnerability and bravery, but Kevin has no fear. I mean, there’s no way I’m getting on a horse naked!”

“Usually when a genre changes radically fans will blame it on the designers “dumbing down” the game for a wider audience. But in this case I think the culprit is technological advance: I think games have been simplified because of voice acting. If the game is all in text, then King Bob can have dozens - maybe even hundreds - of different lines of dialog to respond to all of the possible player actions. If the game is fully voice acted, then this is completely infeasible. Voice acting might not be the only reason games are offering less freedom, but I think it’s a major culprit.”

Worry isn’t work. Being stressed out isn’t work. Anxiety isn’t work. Entertaining a sense of impending doom isn’t work. Incessant internal verbal punishment isn’t work. Indulging the great unknown fear in your own mind isn’t work. Hating yourself isn’t work.

Work is the manifestation of value, and anyone who tells you that a person whose mind is 50% occupied with anxiety is more likely to manifest value is a person who isn’t manifesting much.

“The time had come to shift over to a strategy that would be more effective. The lawsuits were obviously controversial in the media, but the reality was that most people had no idea that what they were doing was illegal at the time of those lawsuits. We did all sorts of surveys. We tried PR firms. We did everything to look at how to begin to change the culture of using illegal P2P. We realized that 1) none of the messages resonated, and 2) most people had no idea that what they were doing was illegal, let alone thought it was wrong. That completely flipped overnight when we started the lawsuits. It made an enormous impression and we were constantly generating dinner conversations about what you may or may not do with your computer. We think it would be very good if there were more such conversations about all the other things that can be done inappropriately with a computer. So we think it had a tremendous impact by very clearly searing in the minds of the public that maybe getting all of this stuff for free isn’t legal after all.”

People are raised to believe that they must enjoy music and that there is something deficient in them if they don’t have strongly held beliefs about what they like, why they like it, and what it means. Similar to spirituality in a religious society, liking music is de rigueur, deviance is not tolerated, and deviants are despised and cast out.

Of course, most of those who don’t especially care for music don’t think of themselves in such a way. They like to hear “Brown Eyed Girl” or whatever Lil Wayne song has been bashing out their brain in heavy rotation for the past six months. But this doesn’t betray a latent appreciation of music. This is just a longing for the familiar. Wanting to hear 50 Cent when one is standing in a nightclub means one feels antsy or uncomfortable and wants reassurance that everything will be all right. It has nothing to do with liking music.

…as much as we enjoy blasting 3D Mario into space and navigating him around 3D orbs, a quick glance at sales figures makes one thing clear. We like Mario best when his world is flat. We still, apparently, prefer running from left to right.

The most recent NPD numbers for July tell a fascinating tale. Sitting in the #4 spot, SMG2 sold 193 thousand copies in North America. That brings its total sales to approximately 1.7 million here (3.5 million worldwide). Impressive figures, to be sure, but less than half of the original Super Mario Galaxy’s sales (4.6 NA, 8.8 worldwide).

Life with @rdio (by Ryan Irelan)

I’ve been thinking of writing a larger review of Rdio. While I really enjoy the service, this bandwidth issue comes up for me because I think constantly streaming like this is inefficient.

Maybe it doesn’t matter anyway. Bandwidth and access should catch up, but if you live in an area without this kind of access, or if you’re literally clogging your workplace’s internet connection streaming Lady Gaga, or if you bump up against 2gig limits, then you may think differently about it.

The computer that’s easiest to use is typically the one you already know how to use. While some may say Macs are easy, the reality is that they can come with a learning curve. PCs running Windows 7 look and work more like the computers you’re familiar with, so you can get up and running quickly.

Everybody in my office took a while to adjust to the new Office Ribbon interface. I still have trouble with it. Sad sequence of Adobe AIR-inspired events for Rdio (by mlaaker)

Just spent some time setting up account in Rdio, then saw they had a desktop Mac app. “Great!” I thought. Then I saw it was AIR-based. “Ugh,” I thought, but I tried nonetheless. And then it forced me to download AIR installer, even though I was pretty sure I had AIR. And then I tried to install. And then it failed.
- mlaaker

You’re not the only one who cringes at the sight of AIR. Stay tuned.
- wilsonminer, who works at Rdio.

Man - I hope this means that an awesome Rdio desktop client is on the way.

I’ve been using Rdio for about a month now, and while I love it it just isn’t as usable as iTunes is. What I think I want is something like iTunes + Rdio. “Most Americans have no problem with BMI charging for its music — except when they do. As Richard Conlon, a vice president at BMI in charge of new media, put it: “A few years back, we had Penn, Schoen and Berland, Hillary’s pollster guys, do a study. The idea was, go and find out what Americans really think about copyright. Do songwriters deserve to be paid? Absolutely! The numbers were enormously favorable — like, 85 percent. The poll asked, ‘If there was a party that wasn’t compensating songwriters, do you think that would be wrong?’ And the answer was, ‘Yes!’ So then, everything’s fine, right? Wrong. Because when it came time to ask people to part with their shekels, it was like: ‘Eww. You want me to pay?’ ”

“All of this, I’m afraid, has the effect of causing us to enjoy the music we own less and to derive smaller amounts of satisfaction from our iPod listening sessions. This can’t be, can it? Fans love their iPods. Yet, as these findings suggest, even the music that we do own, when there is too much choice, becomes much more of a paradox than a paradise. If we, as fans, can’t enjoy the song that’s currently playing on our iPod, what can we?”

“So this is what we’re up against. Dietary guidelines in the schools, dietary guidelines being programmed into educational games, dietary guidelines being quoted as gospel by health reporters in the media, dietary guidelines on display in museums, and of course dietary guidelines on your food packages. No wonder people give you a strange look if you tell them you avoid grains and eat lots of animal fats. It’s been pounded into their heads over and over that a diet like that will kill you.”

Painkiller Deathstreak

The writer, who had never held a video-game controller until last fall, describes his experience playing a series of video games, sometimes alone and sometimes with his sixteen-year-old son. The first thing he learned is that video games—especially the vivid, violent ones—are ridiculously hard to play. They’re humbling. They break you down. They kill you over and over.

“So where’s the good writing on the Web? It’s everywhere else. The interesting new perspectives and provocative thinking isn’t coming from Gizmodo and Silicon Alley. It’s the blogger I’ve never heard of that is blowing me out of my chair these days.”

Old-timey haircuts come with a touch of lather

When he finishes a haircut at his place of business, The Vintage Barber & Style Shop, Brandon Harrison does something that’s growing increasingly rare in this age of chain hair salons situated in strip shopping malls.

Brandon Harrison uses a straight-edge razor for the finishing touch on Monroe Snyder’s haircut.

He applies warm lather to the back of his customer’s neck, then takes a straight razor to him.

The reaction Harrison typically sees is one of surprise mixed with delight. Many men long ago forgot how good a neck shave felt.
